Second Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Development of National Strategy to Mitigate Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) from Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in the Philippines
As part of the development of a national strategy to mitigate short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in the Philippines, a second focus group discussion (FGD) was organised under the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Municipal Solid Waste Initiative (CCAC-MSWI) in Tagaytay city on 6-8 November 2018, inviting different stakeholders to join the workshop, including representatives from the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Climate Change Commission, as well as from academia, civil society and local government units including five pilot cities.
The workshop revisited the results of the 1st FGD held in October 2018 and revisions were made accordingly with technical inputs from the Core Group of Experts (CGE) who were in attendance. Further, it helped to analyse the proposed measures and finalise the baselines and targets for the overall outcome and key strategies to reduce SLCPs from the MSW sector. It also assisted in identifying actions per strategic measure to initially translate strategies into activities. Additionally the workshop subjected the strategies to the analysis of factors and prioritisation of strategies. Finally, the workshop was successful in gathering all the inputs to revise the document in preparation for the second draft of the National Strategy to Reduce SLCPs from MSWM in the Philippines.
As a follow-up, IGES will support DENR to organise a Public Consultation on the draft national strategy and action plans to mitigate SLCPs from MSWM in the Philippines on 28 November 2018.
