Sustainable Consumption and Production

Promoting International Cooperation for Improving Global Resource Efficiency
Workshop under the G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency

Resource Efficiency was featured prominently in the leader’s declaration of the G7 Elmau Summit in June 2015, leading to establishment of the G7 Alliance on Resource Efficiency, a forum where various stakeholders including governments, businesses, research institutions and consumers come together to share knowledge about best practices and lessons learned. The G7 Alliance was mandated to organize a series of workshops on resource efficiency under the leadership of the respective presidency. Three G7 workshops on resource efficiency were organized last year under the presidency of Germany including the one co-hosted by the United Kingdom.

Consumption of natural resources and rise in waste generation have reached an unprecedented level on a global scale.  Taking into account the rapid economic growth of newly industrializing countries, and the resource challenges involved with meeting the needs of a global population expected to exceed nine billion by 2050, fostering international cooperation between G7 and non G7 member states remains of crucial importance. For this reason, the critical role played by emerging and developing states in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the potential outreach of G7 Alliance achievements to non-G7 states were also highlighted in last year’s workshop and the meetings.

In line with these developments, and availing the opportunity that Japan will serve as Chair of G7 in 2016, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan organizes a G7-Alliance workshop on Resource Efficiency on the theme of international cooperation.
