Mongolia has been paying attention to renewable sources of energy in order to put them to practical use, especially in the pastoral livestock sector. In this paper it is shown that renewable sources of energy, especially photovoltaics (PV), may play a key role in the sustainable development of Mongolia, simultaneously solving such problems as energy supply for animal husbandry, pasture degradation, and social problems. For further penetration of PV into the agricultural sector, a more encouraging legal and financial environment should be created, as well as employing foreign official development assistance.
