In International Review for Environmental Strategies (IRES) Volume 2 Number 1 (Summer 2001)
Peer-reviewed Article

Since its establishment in 1998, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) has taken various opportunities to put forward its strategic research outcomes to a number of international policy dialogues on development and the environment. Among such efforts, IGES put forward policy recommendations at the Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development (MCED) 2000, hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), and the Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA) 2000, hosted by the Environment Agency of Japan. Both conferences were held in September 2000, in Kitakyushu City, Japan. These two conferences are a part of the regional preparatory process for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), also known as Rio+10, scheduled for 2 to 11 September 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa. This article reviews the milestones of international policy dialogues, the current WSSD preparatory process and what IGES has proposed for upcoming events.
