Assesment of the Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) from Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in the Philippines - Current and Future Scenarios

Working Paper

This paper summarises the results of a literature review, examines the status of MSWM in the Philippines, makes some efforts to estimate the SLCP emissions in the country’s waste sector based on available data, and offers preliminary projections. The paper includes six sections. After a brief introduction in Section 1, background information on SLCPs is presented in Section 2, outlining impacts on climate, human health and ecosystems, and the corresponding benefits of mitigation. Linkages between MSWM and SLCPs are addressed in Section 3. Section 4 discusses the national policy framework for waste management and status of MSWM in the Philippines. Based on the available data and some initial projections, Section 5 examines SLCP emissions associated with MSWM at present and reviews model mitigation scenarios. Section 6 summarises key findings and provides recommendations.
