2019年から2020年にかけて、英国をはじめとして、ドイツ、フランス、EU、中国、日本、韓国などの世界の主要国において、2050年までに温室効果ガス(GHG)排出量を正味ゼロにする目標(以下、ネット・ゼロ)が相次いで打ち出された。さらに、米国の次期大統領であるバイデン氏は選挙期間中に発表した公約の中で、2050年までにGHG排出ネット・ゼロを実現すると表明している。今や、ネット・ゼロを達成した世界をいかに展望し、そこにどのような道筋で到達するかに真摯に取り組む時代に突入した。

このような中IGESでは、2020年6月に研究レポート「ネット・ゼロという世界-2050年日本-」を日本国内では先駆けて公表した。本レポートをもとに、日本とアジアのネット・ゼロの世界像について記述した。
