Report Chapter
Industry, in the context of this chapter, is mostly confined to the strict definition of the word: -“economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories”. Industry has a major impact on nature and its biodi- versity in Asia and the Pacific, as it does elsewhere in the world. Industry impacts...
Policy Report
This report is the fourth edition of the series “WEPA Outlook on Water Environmental Management”, which consists of two main chapters: Chapter 1 -“Outlook on Water Environmental Management in WEPA Countries” and Chapter 2 - “Country Profiles of Water Environmental Management in WEPA Countries”. The first chapter presents the results of analysis on...

Developing countries must submit forest reference emission levels (FRELs) to the UNFCCC to receive incentives for REDD+ activities (e.g. reducing emissions from deforestation/forest degradation, sustainable management of forests, forest carbon stock conservation/enhancement). These FRELs are generated based on historical CO2 emissions in the land...

Soil moisture (SM) plays a key role in many environmental processes and has a high spatial and temporal variability. Collecting sample SM data through field surveys (e.g. for validation of remote sensing-derived products) can be very expensive and time consuming if a study area is large, and producing accurate SM maps from the sample point data is...

We use crowdsourced GIS data from OpenStreetMap to help automate the mapping of land cover in Landsat satellite imagery. The OpenStreetMap data had limited area coverage, but was useful for building a model which could classify land cover in the other areas.

Accurate mapping of glaciers is important for management of water resources, studying glacier mass-balance, and monitoring glacier health. However, many glaciers are partially covered by debris of varying thicknesses, and these debris-covered glacier areas are difficult to clearly distinguish from the adjacent valley rock using optical remote...

We analyzed the change in vegetated and urban (impervious) area in the Silang-Santa Rosa sub-watershed of the Philippines to assess the implications related to flood risk. Our main findings were: -The impervious area of sub-watershed increased by 54% (from 3,239 ha. to 4,988 ha.). -The vegetated area decreased by 21% (from 8,509 ha. to 6,760 ha)....

We developed a method for mapping residential areas using freely available satellite imagery. The resultant residential area map can be used for risk assessment (e.g. to estimate the population living in a flood-prone area). Our method can be applied for flood risk assessment in other watersheds in the future.
