Groundwater Environment in Khulna, Bangladesh

In Groundwater Environment in Asian Cities: Concepts, Methods, and Case Studies
Chapter: 1st Edition
Book Chapter

Groundwater is the sole source of water supply in Khulna. It is abstracted both by municipality and privately. Furthermore, it is an important source of irrigation at the outskirts of the city and an important source of water supply during disasters that occur quite frequently. Despite the easy availability of groundwater, Khulna is facing acute water shortages as a result of drought, sea water intrusion through high tides, low water levels in local rivers, groundwater pollution, and geogenic occurrences of arsenic. Judicious use of surface and groundwater should be promoted to reduce the high dependence on
groundwater and enhance recharge in the dry season to insure stable discharge of groundwater.
