Climate actions and SDGs: Synergies and trade-offs from an interlinkage perspective

Event: ISAP 2019 P3: Integrating Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Asia
Date: International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific 2019, 31 July 2019, PACIFICO YOKOHAMA, Japan
This a framing presentation on Climate Actions and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) at ISAP 2019 Plenary Session 3 "Integrating Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Asia", focusing on the synergies and trade-offs from an interlinkage perspective. Achieving SDG 13 and other goals related to climate actions, particularly Goal 7 on affordable and clean energy, Goal 8 on economic growth and decent work, Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, etc. impact 17 SDGs through the intrinsic interlinkages between the targets. To analyse and visualise the synergies and trade-offs between the SDG targets at the national level, IGES developed a free online tool on SDG Interlinkages Analysis & Visualisation ( coving 27 countries in Asia and Africa. For example, Target 7.3 on energy efficiency improvement plays an important role in Japan’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to global climate mitigation. Using IGES SDG Interlinkages Tool, it shows that Target 7.3 has many synergies with the targets under Goal 2 (Zero hanger and food security) Goal 9 (Industry, innovation and sustainable infrastructure), Goal 12 (SCP) and Goal 13 on climate actions. However, it may have potential trade-offs with economic development-related targets (Targets 8.1 Sustained economic growth and Target 8.2 Economic productivity) under Goal 8, which need to be taken into account in relevant policies for the implementation of Japan's NDC.
