This study summarises ADB’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) commitment, including the financial sustainability of MSW management and ADB’s engagement in MSW management in the developing member countries (DMCs) over the last 20 years from 2000 to 2020. The study is based on an ADB portfolio review, as well as meetings and interviews assisted by a literature review, aimed at assessing the hypothesis of the study, discovering underlying reasons and gaining insights. The respondents include ADB operations staff and other sectoral staff. In addition, phase 2 plans to include interviews with DMCs’ government officials, project implementation units, multilateral development banks (MDBs) and bilateral development agencies, key international organizations, and the private sector. Based on the study results, key findings are summarised.
