Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF) Regional Water Knowledge Hub for Groundwater Management
LAUNCH MEETING: Bringing a Groundwater Agenda to the Surface
IGES recently organised a launch meeting of the Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF) Regional Knowledge Hub for Groundwater Management entitled " Bringing a Groundwater Agenda to the Surface" on 2-3 June in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting was co-organized by Department of Groundwater Resources (DGR), Thailand with support from Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and other knowledge hub partners. The meeting had three main objectives:

  • Discuss and explore ways to highlight and prioritize groundwater issues on main water agenda and identify feasible actions for sustainable development of groundwater resources;
  • Clarify importance of groundwater in the time of global change to address food and water security and suggest ways to safeguard its strategic resource value from emerging challenges;
  • Facilitate partnership with clients, partners and relevant organisation working in the field of groundwater and dig into opportunities to synergize efforts being taken in different corners of the region.

There were over 100 participants including clients and partners of the regional groundwater hub. The meeting was able to bring together water resource managers from different countries across Asia and the Pacific who shared about the groundwater problems and issues prevailing in their respective countries. The meeting also attracted a number of distinguished groundwater experts from different parts of the world who shared their views and experiences on groundwater management. The meeting highlighted number of important issues, challenges, potential and solutions/choices essential to achieve sustainable groundwater management in the region. An interactive matchmaking exercise and discussion was held among clients, experts and other participants to prioritize specific actions needed in different countries in terms of policy support, training support and pilot/demonstration activities.

A pre-launch workshop entitled "Groundwater - its myths and reality" for young professionals was held at AIT on 1 June. >> For details
