IGES becomes a GRIPP partner

IGES recently became a strategic partner of GRIPP (Groundwater Solutions Initiative for Policy and Practice)–a global partnership for sustainable groundwater management. Led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), GRIPP was launched at two important events: the South Asia Groundwater Forum in Jaipur, India, 1-3 June, 2016 and World Water Week in Stockholm, on 30 August 2016. GRIPP will strengthen, expand and connect current groundwater initiatives, and also support and scale up practical solutions for groundwater management for sustainable development, as well as implementation of the Post-2015 development agenda including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). GRIPP is committed to the objective of ‘Securing groundwater resources for livelihoods, food security, climate resilience and economic growth while sustaining the resource for future generations in developing countries’. It will support the Global Framework for Action developed by the Groundwater Governance Project funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP), the International Association of Hydrologists and the World Bank.

IGES, which is a Regional Knowledge Hub for Groundwater Management of the Asia Pacific Water Forum, will contribute to achieve the GRIPP mission in areas of context-specific research, knowledge generation, networking with experts, partners and stakeholders, and strategic collaboration in project implementation in the Asia-Pacific region. We hope that this new partnership with GRIPP will greatly enhance over ten years of IGES involvement in promoting sustainable groundwater solutions in the region as well as its vision for realising sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.
