The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will produce the 7th Assessment Report (AR7), scheduled for 2023-2028. Within this process, it has been decided to prepare a special report on 'Climate Change and Cities' in response to the growing interest in the impacts of climate change on cities and the challenges and opportunities for city-specific mitigation and adaptation. As part of strengthening Japan's contribution to the IPCC 7th Assessment Cycle, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) launched a collaborative research project on urban transformation with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in September 2023, with the aim of providing key findings for the Special Report on 'Climate Change and Cities'.

This symposium presented the report produced by this joint research project and discussed how Japan can contribute to the IPCC 7th assessment cycle, including its contribution to the IPCC Special Report on 'Climate Change and Cities'.
