JCM workshop for accelerating private sector participation in Cambodia
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), together with Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (DCC, MONRE) and General Secretariat of National Council for Sustainable Development (GSSD) organised the “the JCM Workshop on Low Carbon Technologies for Sustainable Development in Cambodia” on 1 February 2019.
In order to promote further dissemination of low carbon technologies in Cambodia through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), a workshop was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to share the experiences of JCM projects. Its aim was to enhance understanding of relevant policy measures for facilitating the implementation of projects which can also contribute to sustainable development in Cambodia. IGES researchers made presentations titled “Result of COP24 and Article 6 of Paris Agreement” and “Update on the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and Financing Programme”, and discussed how to utilize JCM projects to implement and enhance the (Nationally Determined Contribution) NDC targets under the Paris Agreement. The participant from DCC, MONRE introduced the current status of ongoing JCM projects in Cambodia and expressed their intention to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in the country. The participant from Cambodia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy introduced their country’s target of energy efficiency in the fields of building, industry and transport, and also shared their energy efficient policy measures, including the plan for adopting energy efficiency standards for air conditioners. AEON MALL Cambodia introduced their experience in implementing “Introduction of 1MW Solar Power System and High Efficiency Centrifugal Chiller in Large Shopping Mall”, which is one of the country’s JCM model projects, and shared their activities related to environmental management. Approximately 40 participants, representing the government and the private sector, attended the workshop and actively participated in the discussion about further development of the JCM in Cambodia.
