Workshop on Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)
Accelerating Private Sector Participation towards Low-Carbon Development in Indonesia
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Indonesia JCM Secretariat, Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, Indonesia (CMEA) jointly organised the “Workshop on Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM): Accelerating Private Sector Participation towards Low-Carbon Development in Indonesia” on 14 February 2018.
The workshop facilitated discussions on the latest mitigation efforts in the energy sector through national policies and market mechanisms. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources shared updated national policies and programmes on energy conservation, and the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society proposed policy recommendations for addressing challenges in promoting renewable energy. On the market mechanism topic, IGES shared the status of market mechanisms (CDM and JCM) under the Paris Agreement in the UNFCCC negotiations, especially the need for avoiding double counting of units, while two Indonesian companies, PT Semen Indonesia and PT Indesso Aroma, shared their experiences on JCM model projects in waste heat recovery and solar power generation. IGES also introduced the JCM experiences in other countries that are not available yet in Indonesia and the support schemes offered to companies. Around 70 participants from the private sector and the government engaged in enthusiastic discussions on field experiences in utilising the JCM and implementing projects. The JCM experiences have been contributing to the promotion of low-carbon technologies in Indonesia and building the confidence to meet its commitment in climate change mitigation to the international community.
