Press Release:
IGES and ICLEI Japan on Collaboration to Promote Joint Research and Activities towards Sustainable Cities in the Asia-Pacific
16 April 2013
On 16 April 2013, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability Japan Office (ICLEI Japan) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on promoting collaboration of research and activities to contribute to realising sustainable cities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Cities in every Asia-Pacific country face the urgent issue of promoting low-carbon and sustainable development with a low environmental load. Both institutions will collaborate to address these issues, based on the respect for mutual complementarity - that is, IGES’s expertise in cities/local policy research and case studies related to sustainability in cities in the Asia-Pacific region, and ICLEI Japan’s experience of implementing actual works and programmes through its international network of more than 1,000 local cities/local government in 84 countries over the world.

IGES and ICLEI Japan will jointly implement activities including exchange of information and knowledge, capacity building, policy implementation support, and creating frameworks for such issues as carbon trade and offsetting, in fields including climate change mitigation and adaptation, effective use of resources (3R), biodiversity conservation and green infrastructure at the city/local authority level in the Asia-Pacific region.
