IGES and UNEP agree to promote collaborative research on adaptation to climate change and other priority environmental issues in Asia and the Pacific

On 7 December 2010, at the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Cancun, Mexico, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) as an international research institute and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in promoting research and other activities regarding climate change responses, ecosystems management and other priority environmental issues.

The scope under the MOU covers i) research and knowledge management on adaptation to climate change in the Asia Pacific region including the activities of Asia Pacific Adaptation Network *1, ii) exchange of technical information and data through diverse media and opportunities including the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) process, Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development, and Climate Change Co-benefits Partnership *2, and iii) promotion of sustainable development policy dialogues through a variety of activities.

UNEP and IGES have already started several collaborative activities. In October 2010, the Asia Pacific Adaptation Forum was held in Bangkok. The Forum was organised jointly with partner institutes and attracted as many as 600 participants. IGES has also been recently invited to write the Asia-Pacific chapter of the UNEP Global Outlook on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Policies. UNEP and IGES will hold regular bilateral meetings to develop and monitor joint projects and programmes under the MOU as well as to respond to newly emerging issues in the realm of strengthening efforts to environment and sustainable development as strategic and long-term mutual partners.

*1. IGES co-hosts the Regional Hub for the Network with AIT-UNEP RRC.AP, and UNEP ROAP is providing secretariat services for the Network Steering Committee
