IGES 10th Anniversary Symposium "Strategy to Combat Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific"

9 May 2008

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES, headquarters located in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture; Chair of the Board of Directors, Prof. Hironori Hamanaka), IGES will hold a symposium in Yokohama on 21 June 2008, entitled "Strategy to Combat Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific".

IGES has invited such participants as Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, as well as leading experts from international organisations and research institutes from countries across Asia, such as Japan, China, Republic of Korea and Indonesia. The symposium will feature a cutting-edge debate on climate change policies that should be implemented by the Asia-Pacific region. There will also be a special session in the morning before the symposium, where researchers and key figures from various fields will exchange opinions on specific topics related to climate change.

Coming just before the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July, IGES hopes to deepen the debate on climate change action from an Asia Pacific viewpoint, and then disseminate the results across a wide spectrum.

Furthermore, on the day of the symposium, IGES will announce the Second IGES White Paper, a summary of policy recommendations for mitigation and adaptation of climate change to meet the needs of Asia Pacific countries.
