IGES has endorsed the Joint Statement by the Global Roundtable on Climate Change

On 20 February in New York, US, 85 leading companies and organisations from around the world issued a Joint Statement by the Global Roundtable on Climate Change (GROCC)*. The statement calls for urgent actions to be taken by both governments and businesses against global warming.

IGES has endorsed the statement as one of the signatory international research organisations, which include the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.

Chair: Jeffrey Sachs, Director, the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
The membership consists of more than 100 stakeholders including business, governments, international organisations, research institutes and NGOs from around the world, who aim to discuss on scientific, technological, and economic issues critical to shaping sound public policies on climate change.

[Press briefing on the Joint Statement of GROCC]
21 February 2007, Prof. Akio Morishima, the Chair of the Board of Directors, IGES, held a press briefing on the Joint Statement of GROCC at the Ministry of Environment Press Club in Tokyo.

It was a great success and was attended by most of the major national newspapers. Prof. Morishima introduced the essence of the statement together with explanatory remarks about GROCC. He emphasised especially that leaders from diverse sectors of the world have reached a consensus on addressing climate change.

After his briefing there was a Q&A session with several questions on the background and impact of the statement, which indicated much interest in this issue among those attending.
