IGES launches the new online platform of EnviroScope
providing updated information on world environment and sustainability issues

25 November, 2004
Hayama, Japan - -The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is pleased to announce the launch of its new online platform "IGES EnviroScope" which is being set up to collect and provide detailed and up-to-date information on current environmental and sustainability issues, and policy measures in different countries and regions, as well as research output from IGES and other institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region and around the world.

The recently launched "Headlines" function displays the newest topics from the websites of participating organisations in real-time. On selecting any website from the list of participating organisations, the up-to-date information headlines automatically obtained from selected sites appear. By clicking on any of the headlines, the user can jump directly to the original article without visiting all of the many sites.

At the moment more than 30 institutions, including UN-related organisations, and national administrative organisations and research institutions from 16 countries around the world, participate in IGES EnviroScope. We are promoting an increase in the number of sites which join EnviroScope. At the same time, besides the "Headlines" function, other functions, for example "library", which is a cross-cutting searchable database of all IGES research output, will be added in the near future.

What is RSS?
The function of IGES EnviroScope is based on RSS (Rich Site Summary), which is XML format designed to share news, headlines and other web content. By providing the compiled site information (such as headings and outlines) in this format, it is possible to release the updated information efficiently. RSS is relatively new technology, but it is spreading quickly, particularly in Europe and the United States.
