IGES Kansai Research Centre International Symposium 2010

Research Partnership for the Application of Low Carbon Technology for Sustainable Development

The application of low-carbon technology is one of the most important issues for emerging countries in Asia such as India and China which are going through significant economic growth.

The Kansai Research Centre of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) officially launched an international joint research project with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Kyoto University in fiscal 2010. This joint research aims to promote the application of Japanese low-carbon technologies in India. The joint research will involve government, research institutes and industrial sectors in both countries. It will cover a variety of aspects, including identification of promising low-carbon technologies, implementation of pilot projects to measure, monitoring and demonstration of the effects of technology application, capacity building of technical experts and managers, and establishment of a cooperation framework between the public and the private sectors. The research will aim to develop an effective scheme for promoting the application of Japanese low-carbon technologies.

This symposium introduced the purposes and objects of the present research through discussion among researchers from Kyoto University and TERI and relevant experts. The joint research will be implemented as a Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) project, implemented through collaboration with Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
