IPCC Open Symposium

Science and policy to cope with climate change and the importance of GHG inventory to assess mitigation progress

UNFCCC SB38サイドイベント

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1998 to:

  1. Make periodic assessments of the scientific impacts and the socio-economic aspects of climate change, as well as assess the adaptation and mitigation options to address it;
  2. Assess, and develop as necessary, methodologies such as the IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories;
  3. Provide, on request, scientific/technical/socio-economic advice to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its bodies.

The aim of this symposium was to inform, consider and discuss issues related to climate change. The symposium was composed of three sessions, 1) Science and policy to cope with climate change, 2) Importance of GHG inventory to assess mitigation progress and 3) GHG inventory and estimation of GHG emissions at various levels.

IPCC TFI Technical Support Unit (TSU)
Established within IGES in 1999, TSU supports the activities of IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI). The TFI develops and promotes the IPCC guidelines and relevant tools for the estimation and reporting of national greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
