United Nations University Global Seminar Japan 30th Shonan Session

Global Environment and Human Security:
Towards the Effective Implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda

The UNU Global Seminar aims at promoting better understanding of global problems by inviting world-renowned experts to exchange views with students from the best universities in Japan. As a part of the seminar, the Kanagawa Session is an opportunity for students from different parts of the world to get together to discuss global issues from their regional and local perspectives.

As a lecturer at one of the breakout sessions at the Kanagawa Session, Ms. Ikuho Miyazawa, policy researcher at IGES, introduced existing views on the linkage between global environment and human security, and the global discussion on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an example to address this issue. Participants actively gave their opinions on how global environment positively or negatively affects human security during group discussions.

Environmental problems are often considered as threats to human security. However, participants shared views that addressing environmental problems also contributes to ensuring human security, and deepened their understanding that effective implementation of SDGs could be a step forward in realising this positive linkage.
