Subject: Brief notes from ICCM2 and AP regional decision

Dear SAICM National Focal Points in Asia Pacific countries,

Now we should congratulate ourselves on the success of the 2nd International Conference on Chemicals Management, held in Geneva on 11-15 May. We will need to wait for a while for the meeting report to become available, but the report by the Earth Negotiating Bulletin is already available on their website (http://www.iisd.ca/chemical/iccm2/).

In short, the meeting agreed on the ICCM rules of procedure (except for one rule regarding the decision making method), established a bureau and an open-ended working group, adopted resolutions on four emerging policy issues (nanomaterial, chemicals in products, lead in paint and e-waste), and also adopted a resolution on financial issues.

During the meeting, our region held regional consultation meetings every morning. Attached is our region's decision on the future regional activities. As you find hear, we have elected a new regional focal point, Mr Manoranjan HOTA of India. Two representatives to the Quick Start Program Executive Board, Mr Nassereddin Heidari of Iran and Mr Supat Wangwongwatana of Thailand, were re-elected. I was elected into the ICCM bureau, as one of the four vice-presidents. Our decision in Geneva requests these four officers to cooperate in facilitating communication within Asia Pacific region regarding the implementation of SAICM. You will receive further information from us. If you have any question or suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards,

Eisaku Toda
