Regional Workshop of the Greater Mekong Sub-region to share the lessons learnt from the Viet Nam experience on the National Strategy of Integrated Solid waste Management/ 3R

Since 2005, UNCRD and IGES have supported the development of National 3R Strategy in Viet Nam. As a part of the "Greater Mekong Sub-region Core Environmental Program and Biodiversity Corridors Initiative" of the Asian Development Bank, this project was implemented to transfer the experience of Viet Nam in promoting the 3Rs to other countries in the region. Following the official adoption of National 3R Strategy of Viet Nam by Prime Minister of Viet Nam in December 2009, INSPONRE/MONRE, UNCRD, and IGES co-organised Regional Workshop of the Greater Mekong Sub-region to disseminate Viet Nam's experience to other GMS countries in 28-29 July, 2010.

The workshop was held with participation of the governmental officials in charge of waste management and 3R policies from Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The workshop discussed challenges and opportunities to implement 3R strategies in GMS countries and the future direction of 3R policy in the GMS region.

The workshop adopted the Chair's Summary which emphasised the importance of the 3R approach and its multiple benefits, and the importance of National 3R Strategies in support of the objectives of the Tokyo 3R Statement. The GMS countries agreed to continue exchanging relevant information for better implementation of the 3R policies, and attached strategic importance to the cooperation and partnership with international organisations, and bilateral and multilateral donor communities.

From SCP Group of IGES, Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta, Deputy Group Director and Dr. Janya Sang-Arun participated in the workshop. In addition, Dr. Jamsranjav Baasansuren participated from IPCC/TSU. Dr. Hotta made a presentation on "win-win solutions for climate change and waste management, focusing on co-benefits". IGES also planned and organised a session in Climate Change and Solid Waste Management with presentations from Dr. Sang-Arun on "Utilisation of urban organic waste in GMS towards climate change mitigation" and Dr. Baasansuren on "Estimating GHG emissions from landfills and organic waste treatment".
