IGES co-chaired an international workshop on Chemicals in Products
16-18 March 2011, Geneva, Switzerland

IGES Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Group Director Magnus Bengtsson co-chaired an international workshop on Chemicals in Products on 16-18 March, organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop, which was held in Geneva, gathered some 80 participants from governments in all regions, industry, academia and NGOs. The two main objectives were to increase awareness on the issue of Chemicals in Products (CiP) and on the activities undertaken as part of UNEPfs ongoing CiP project, and to develop elements of recommendations on cooperative action on CiP.

Partnering for responsible living
14-15 March 2011, Maltepe University, Istanbul, Turkey

The Partnership for Education and research about Responsible Living (PERL) brought together 140 people from 33 countries for their first international conference on 14-15 March 2011. Titled gEnabling Responsible Livingh, it was hosted by Maltepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. The conference focused on the role of partnerships in enabling responsible living along with the contributions that can be made through research and education.

Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta, Deputy Director of SCP Group participated in the 2nd workshop for FY 2010 of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) Working Group on "3R Policies for Southeast and East Asia held in Singapore and contributed to the discussions on finalisation of the results from the Working Group.

Contribution to the CSD19 process

The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the nineteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19) took place at UN Headquarters in New York from 28 February to 4 March 2011. The IPM provided a forum to discuss policy options and possible actions to enable the implementation of measures and policies concerning the current thematic issues: transport, chemicals, waste management, mining, and sustainable consumption and production patterns.
At this IPM for CSD19, Magnus Bengtsson, Director of IGES' SCP Group, was invited as one of three panel speakers in the session on waste management on 2 March. The panel was composed of key experts, including Katharina Kummer Peiry, Executive Secretary of the Basel Convention.

Ministry of the Environment of Japan and Japan Association for Environmental Law and Policy organised a symposium to mark the 10 year anniversary of the Fundamental Law for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society. Dr. Hotta, Deputy Director of SCP Group made a presentation titled “Expected Role of Japan’s Recycling Policy under Globalisation and Current Status of Recycling Policy in Asia” and acted as a panelist at the panel discussion of the Symposium..

The Tripartite Green Economy Policy Seminar

The Tripartite Green Economy Policy Seminar was recently held in Beijing, 2-3 December 2010, bringing together government officials and policy experts from China, Republic of Korea and Japan. Experts from IGES were invited to give presentations.
Lewis Akenji, an IGES Policy Research Fellow presented on gSustainable Consumption and Production in Asia and the Pacific: Policy overview and collaboration opportunities.h It expanded on selected national strategies in the region, to show how different countries are employing different approaches with the aim of achieving the objective of SCP.

The Earth Charter as an ethical framework for a sustainable world

IGES contributed to international activities to mark the 10th anniversary of the Earth Charter. The conference, titled, "Ethical Framework for a Sustainable World" was held in Ahmadabad, India from 1-3 November2010. Two IGES representatives, Professor Ryokichi Hirono and Mr. Lewis Akenji were invited as presenters.

IGES contributed to JP Environmental Forum 2010

Japan Paper and Pulp Co. has been organising JP Environmental Forum to examine the role and responsibility of private sector in environmental conservation once a year since 1999.
JP Environmental Forum: Reconsidering Recycling as a Resource Strategy Towards the Future focused on a significance of resource recycling and role of private sector. Dr. Hotta, Deputy Director of SCP Group acted as a moderator of the Forum.

The Joint Workshop of gAsia Resource Circulation Policy Researchh and
gERIA 3R Policy Working Grouph
7-8 October 2010, Malaysia
Aiming for providing inputs to a Vision of Sound Material Cycle Society in East Asia, the Joint Workshop of gAsia Resource Circulation Policy Researchh and gERIA 3R Policy Working Grouph was to facilitate discussions and networking of the experts of 3R policy research in the region. The participating experts discussed general challenges associated with resource circulation and strategic implementation of the 3Rs as well as specific challenges associated with development of evaluation methods for resource circulation. This workshop was held with local support from Solid Waste Management Research Center of University of Malaya.

IGES SCP Group Director Dr. Magnus Bengtsson was invited to make a presentation at the 2nd meeting of the Regional 3R Forum in Asia, organised by UNCRD, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government of Malaysia, and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. The meeting was held on the 4-6 October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Dr. Bengtsson made a presentation in a plenary session with the theme "Partnerships for realizing Low Carbon and Resource Efficient Society".

On 4-6 September 2010, an expert workshop on resource productivity policy was co-organised by Wuppertal Institute, East-West Center and Wuppertal University at European Commission in Brussels Belgium. Regional Workshop of the Greater Mekong Sub-region to share the lessons learnt from the Viet Nam experience on the National Strategy of Integrated Solid waste Management/ 3R

Since 2005, UNCRD and IGES have supported the development of National 3R Strategy in Viet Nam. As a part of the gGreater Mekong Sub-region Core Environmental Program and Biodiversity Corridors Initiativeh of the Asian Development Bank, this project was implemented to transfer the experience of Viet Nam in promoting the 3Rs to other countries in the region. Following the official adoption of National 3R Strategy of Viet Nam by Prime Minister of Viet Nam in December 2009, INSPONRE/MONRE, UNCRD, and IGES co-organised Regional Workshop of the Greater Mekong Sub-region to disseminate Viet Namfs experience to other GMS countries in 28-29 July, 2010.

In-Country Training Workshop on the National Strategy on Integrated Solid Waste Management to 2025, Vision to 2050

Co-organised by United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), Institute of Strategy,
Policy on Natural Resources and Environment, MONRE, Viet Nam (ISPONRE/MONRE),
and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)
In December 2009, the National 3R Strategy of Viet Nam, gNational Strategy of Integrated Solid Waste Management to 2025, Vision to 2050h was officially approved and adopted by Prime Minister of Viet Nam. With supports from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Asia Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) have provided their technical supports to develop this National Strategy.
Following the official adoption of the Strategy, in-country training workshop was organised by inviting governmental officials from different line ministries and local governments in Viet Nam on 27 July, 2010 in Hai Phong, Viet Nam. After the overview of National 3R Strategy, the role of different line ministries, private sectors, and other stakeholders was discussed towards implementation of the strategy.

IGES' contribution to the 9th Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production (APRSCP)

The 9th Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production (APRSCP) was held on 10-12 June 2010, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
IGES and UNEP organised a joint roundtable session "Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Policies and National Strategies" at the APRSCP.
The session discussed how SCP can be applied to national policies. Dr. Magnus Bengtsson, the IGES SCP Group Director was on the roundtable panel, where he discussed "Exploring Policy Directions for SCP in Asia", and pointed out the research gaps on the sustainability pathway and explored policy directions for SCP in Asia for immediate consideration.
Also
at its parallel sessions, Mr. Lewis Akenji, Associate Researcher of the IGES SCP Group presented on "Is the Consumer really King? Stakeholder Analysis for SCP using Example of the Packaging Value Chain", while Dr. Robert Didham of the IGES Governance and Capacity Group Policy Researcher presented on "Education for Sustainable Consumption: Effective Strategies to Promote Responsible Consumer Behaviour". Both presentations were based on the IGES White Paper III publication.

National UN Rio+20 Summit Stakeholder Consultation

IGES participated in the first Sri Lankan stakeholder consultation themed "Climate Sustainability in a Green Economy" towards the UN Rio+20 Summit in 2012. Mr. Lewis Akenji, Associate Researcher of the IGES SCP Group presented a SCP approach to green economy entitled: "Can Green Consumerism Deliver? A Sustainable Consumption and Production Approach to Green Economy".
