SAICM seminar

This seminar was held as an open seminar for the purpose of disseminating accurate information about SAICM. Dr. Magnus Bengtsson, Manager of the IGES WMR Project made a presentation titled gChemicals in Products an emerging theme under SAICM h. Mr. Hideyuki Mori, Vice president of IGES chaired a panel discussion regarding how promotes SAICM practices in Asia-pacific region.

SAICM QSP Reporting meeting

25 March 2010, Fukoku Seimei Building, Tokyo

In order to support SAICM practices in Asia-Pacific region, MOEJ is contributing to support program, SAICM Quick Start Program (QSP) for Thailand and Bhutan since FY2008. In this meeting, QSP results in both countries were reported and exchanged views on future activities and challenges. IGES as an organiser, Mr Hideyuki Mori (Vice president of IGES), Dr. Magnus Bengtsson (IGES WMR Project Manager), Mr. Shiko Hayashi (IGES WMR Project Researcher), Mr. Yoshiaki Totoki (IGES WMR Project Researcher) and Mr. Lewis Akenji (IGES WMR Project Researcher) participated in this meeting.

Contribution to United Nations CSD Inter-sessional Meeting gInternational Experts Meeting on Extension of Waste Management Service to Developing Countriesh

18-19 March 2010

As an inter-sessional meeting of CSD 18 to be held in New York in May 2010, International Experts Meeting on Extension of Waste Management Service to Developing Countries was co-organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA), Ministry of the Environment/Government of Japan, and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD).

IGES Waste Management and Resources (WMR) Project has supported the meeting by compiling Chairfs summary as a part of drafting committees.

Dr. Magnus Bengtsson, Manager of WMR and Mr. Toshizo Maeda, IGES Kitakyushu Office made a presentation titled gEnhancing public awareness, and stakeholdersf empowerment and involvement in waste managementh, which stressed the importance of strengthened governance with the participation of citizens and other stakeholders toward effective implementation of 3R policy.

The 3rd Workshop of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) Working Group on "3R Policies for Southeast and East Asia" for FY 2009

3-4 March 2010, Jakarta, Indonesia

IGES Waste Management and Resources (WMR) Project participated in the 3rd workshop for FY 2009 of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) Working Group on "3R Policies for Southeast and East Asia held in ERIA Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia. WMR Project contributed to the discussions on standards for recycling and recyclables, on how to formalize informal sector, and on how to develop 3R-related policy indicators in Asia. Also, WMR Project provided inputs on "identification to assess effectiveness of the 3R policies in the context of developing Asia".

On February 8 2010, gPromoting Japan-China Cooperation on Environmental Issues of the 21st Century: In Pursuit of Recycling Societyh was held at Tokyo, Japan. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Hirono Ryokichi (Professor Emeritus, Seikei University, Councilor, IGES) and co-sponsored by The Global Forum of Japan (GFJ) and School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, China. Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta (Sub-Manager of IGES Waste Management and Resources Project) reported on gFuture direction about international cooperation toward sustainable resource circulation in East and Southeast Asiah, and contributed to the discussion of Japan-China Cooperation on environmental issue in the area of 3R policy in the future.

WMR participated in the 2nd Workshop for FY 2009 of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) Working Group on "3R Policies for Southeast and East Asia held in JETRO Malaysia Office, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. WMR contributed in the discussions on industrial standard setting for recycled goods as well as international recycling and provide inputs on "needs for international collaboration and research for sustainable resource circulation in East and Southeast Asia".

UNEP Chemicals in Product Scoping Meetings

17-18 December 2009, Geneva, Switzerland

Dr. Magnus Bengtsson, Manager of the IGES Waste Management and Resources Project participated in the discussions on future activities about Chemicals in Products project. The meeting summed up the questionnaire results on Chemicals in Products, information system about Chemicals in Products existing, and some priority fields or the needs about product-related information selected after this discussion.

Inaugural Meeting of the Regional 3R Forum in Asia; a facility of international collaboration towards 3R policy implementation in Asian countries

On November 11-12, 2009, Inaugural Meeting of the Regional 3R Forum in Asia; a facility of international collaboration towards 3R policy implementation in Asian countries, was organised in Tokyo.
This meeting was organised with participation from Asian countries, international organisations, aid agencies, and experts by Ministry of the Environment of Japan and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) with support from IGES.

On November 12, 2009, the participants of the meeting agree in Tokyo 3R Statement which addressed the facilitation of various activities towards 3R implementation in Asia and official launching of Regional 3R Forum in Asia.IGES has supported this process in various ways including initial planning of the forum. Under the forum, in collaboration with collaborating researchers, IGES will coordinate an international collaborative research project" Asia Resource Circulation Policy Research Project" which aims to provide policy-relevant proposals in response to challenges associated with 3R policy implementation in Asia.

Inaugural Workshop of "Asia Resource Circulation Policy Research"

An international collaborative "Asia Resource Circulation Policy Research Project" was launched to evaluate economic, social and environmental benefits of the 3Rs and provide policy-relevant advice on sustainable resource circulation in Asia. IGES,as its coordinating organisation, organised an inaugural workshop on 9-10 November 2009 in Tokyo, Japan to share directions of research among collaborating researchers.

WMR participated in the 1st workshop for FY 2009 of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) Working Group on "3R Policies for Southeast and East Asia held in ERIA Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia. WMR contributed in the discussions on the role of different stakeholders in 3R implementation and provided inputs on gExtended Producer Responsibility Policy in East Asiah.

UNEP and IGES support the Philippines in addressing the role of the informal sector in solid waste management: National Framework Plan for the Informal Waste Sector in Solid Waste Management

July 2009

The National Solid Waste Management Commission of the Philippines issued the "National Framework Plan for the Informal Waste Sector in Solid Waste Management" in July 2009.

This plan intends to improve the situation surrounding the informal sector (people and organisations engaged in solid waste management in an informal manner) which plays a major role in solid waste management in the Philippines and which will be integrated into the "National Ecological Solid Waste Management Act".

IGES has supported this project since 2005, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and AIT-United Nations Environmental Programme/Regional Resource Center in Asia and the Pacific.

International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2009)

26-27 June 2009, Hayama, Japan

The Waste Management and Resource Efficiency team led two sessions at the event, organised by IGES. The first, a plenary session, "Towards Sustainable Consumption in Developing Asia: Challenges and Needs" was a panel discussion. It explored the meaning of sustainable consumption and production as it pertains to Asia and the Pacific by inviting speakers who have been researching the field from the EU and the US, as well as Asia. The session also discussed how IGES, as an environmental policy think-tank can contribute to this field of policy research.

The second session, "Exploring Strategic Research Topics on Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asia and the Pacific" was a workshop aimed at facilitating opinion exchanges among experts on the topic of sustainable consumption and production in Asia and the Pacific in relation to IGES's next research phase (2010-13). The session explored important research themes to which IGES can contribute and identified potential priority research areas.

The Second Session of the International Conference for Chemical Management (ICCM2)

11-15 May 2009, Geneva, Switzerland

IGES Waste and Resources Project supported the Japanese government delegation at the second session of the International Conference for Chemical Management (ICCM2). Mr. Yoshiaki Totoki, researcher of the IGES Waste and Resources Project, supported officials from MOE who participated as Japanese delegation.
