International Symposium"Sustainable Resource Use: Issues and Policies with Special Reference to Asia"

January 13, 2012

In this symposium, Dr. Heinz Schandl made the keynote address and demonstrated the deteriorating trend of resource efficiency, its causes and the necessity of policies for its improvement in the Asia-Pacific region. After his keynote address, researchers involved in Environmental Economic Research presented research outcomes on the following themes: categorization of resource circulation and resource use reduction policies, their evaluations, and economic and physical appraisal on resource constraint.

Dr. Hotta, Deputy Director of SCP Group made a presentation titled gDirection of International Cooperation Towards Sustainable Resource Circulation in Asiah and acted as a panelist at the panel discussion of the symposium.

The3rd Regional 3R Forum in Asia was co-organised by National Environmental Agency of Singapore, United Nations Centre for Regional Development, and Ministry of the Environment of Japan. The meeting discussed actively how to form an effective collaboration for 3R technology transfer in the region. Also, in the final day, the meeting adopted Chairfs Summary and gRecommendations of the Singapore Forum on the 3Rs in Achieving a Resource Efficient Society in Asiah as inputs for gGreen Economyh one of major themes of Rio+20 process.

The 5th Workshop of “Asia Resource Circulation Policy Research”

As an associated event to the 3rd Regional 3R Forum in Asia, the Workshop is to facilitate discussions and networking of the experts of informal sector in recycling and waste management sector in the Asia Pacific region. This specific workshop is to facilitate discussions on the role and typology of informal sector in waste management and recycling, and possible options for policy intervention from social, economic and environmental perspectives.

New Report Makes Compelling Case for Transition to Green Economy (1970-2005)

The report gResource Efficiency: Economics and Outlook for Asia and the Pacific (REEO)h is the result of a unique collaboration between four leading regional institutes. Main author is the Australian research organization SCIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organizsation) and the contributors include the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Energy and Research Institute (TERI) in India. The REEO project was initiated by UNEP and the report was launched on the 20th September 2011 at the World Resources Forum in Davos, Switzerland. IGES is announcing key messages based on the REEO report, which is the first kind of date and analysis in the Asia Pacific Region.

Workshop on Solid Waste Management Actors in Cambodia

29-31 August 2011

IGES and Cambodian Education and Waste Management Organization and under hospitalizing by the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia and the Battambang Provincial Administration, the Training Workshop on Accounting and Utilising GHG Emission Reduction Measures for Local Waste Management Actors in Cambodia was conducted on 29th - 31st August 2011 at the Hotel Khemara Battambang 1 in Battambang City, Cambodia. The sponsors for the training workshop are the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research - APN and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan - MOEJ.

Participation at UN CSD 19 session

2-13 May 2011, New York, USA

The 19th session of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD) ended in New York on May 13, 2011, regrettably without any agreed text after over two weeks of negotiations among member states. The thematic issues for this policy session were transport, chemicals, waste management and mining; one of the high expectations of the session was an agreement on a 10-year framework of programmes (10YFP) to support the transition towards sustainable consumption and production. The agreement failed to materialize.

CSD (UN Commission on Sustainable Development) Intersessional Conference on Building Partnerships for Moving towards Zero Waste

16-18 February 2011, Tokyo, Japan

United Nations Sustainable Waste Management Conference “Building Partnerships for Moving towards Zero Waste” was co-organized by the United Nations and Ministry of the Environment of Japan between February 16 and 18 2011 in Tokyo. This conference is Intersessional Conference of the 19th United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development(CSD 19) which was held in May 2011. With participation from national governments, local governments, waste management industries, NGOs, and international organizations, and experts, the meeting discussed the ways to promote multi-stakeholders partnerships for waste management.

As a member of drafting committee of the Forum, Dr. Magnus Bengtsson and Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta of SCP Group contributed for finalizing Chair's Summary of the Conference.
