IGES Special Session on Urban Environment at the IHDP Open Meeting 2005
Urban Transformation and Reforms for Sustainability - Local solutions for global change
The IGES UE Project successfully organised a special session entitled, "Urban Transformation and Reform for Sustainability - Local Solutions for Global Change" at the 6th IHDP Open Meeting, Bonn, 2005. The session consisted of two parts.

Part I consisted of opening remarks by Prof. Akio Morishima, chair of the Board of Directors of IGES, and six research presentations. Topics of the presentation included: sustainability assessment, urban carbon footprint, theoretical and practical challenges addressing global issues at the local level, co-benefit approaches in Chinese cities, municipal solid waste management in Mumbai, and an evaluation of co-benefit effects of alternative transportation sector planning.

Part II consisted of a panel discussion and open floor discussion and was moderated by Dr. Xuemei Bai, a senior research fellow at IGES. The discussions were centred on the question of "What should be done, and by whom to promote the integration of global concerns into local management in developing cities in Asia?" The panelists and the audience participated in a heated discussion debating and exchanging views on issues such as:
a. What should be the long-term and short-term strategies for developing cities to mitigate GHG emissions?
b. What are the easy entry points for cities to address global concerns at the city level?
c. What can be done by different governmental units, international and national funding agencies and the scientific community to encourage the integration at the city level?
d. What cities can do to better to utilise the potential of the above mentioned institutions and address the global concerns?

Selected papers from the session will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology in March 2007.
