Hayama, Japan (3 July 2017) – IGES is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kazuhiko Takeuchi as the new Chair of its Board of Directors, effective 1 July 2017. Dr. Takeuchi, who has been an active member of IGES’s Board since 2012, brings to the Institute four decades of experience in the field of sustainability science. In so doing he succeeds Prof. Hironori Hamanaka, who over his ten-year tenure from 2007 played a decisive role in shaping IGES’s strategic vision and priorities. Prof. Hamanaka, who will stay on as a Special Research Advisor to the Institute, reflected on Dr. Takeuchi’s nomination, stating that “As IGES sets on course towards commemorating its 20th Anniversary in 2018, I am confident Dr. Takeuchi’s leadership will position the Institute as a genuine agent of change, both within the region and across the world.”

Dr. Takeuchi comes to IGES following a distinguished academic career that has included faculty and supervisory positions with several leading universities in Japan. Over the years he has been a prominent and highly regarded figure in interdisciplinary sustainable development studies, having overseen numerous research initiatives and projects including as Director of the University of Tokyo’s Asian Natural Environmental Science Center from 1995-1997, as Senior Visiting Professor at United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) from 2016, and as Director of the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S) at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Advanced Study (UTIAS) from 2012.

Commenting on his new role at IGES Dr. Takeuchi said: “It is my greatest honour and pleasure to have taken up the position of Chair of the Board of Directors. Following the direction provided by my predecessor Prof. Hamanaka, I will commit myself to ensuring the Institute continues to make steady advances in strategic research for promoting sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific."

"With the launch of IGES Integrative Strategic Research Programme for its 7th Phase in July 2017, the Institute will focus on scaling up its efforts, working with various stakeholders to support the design of sustainable policies and actions in the region."

“As IGES works to forge greater links with national governments, local authorities, international organisations, research institutes, businesses, NGOs and local communities, the Institute will move forward with its research directed towards realising a low-carbon, resource-saving and sustainable Asia-Pacific that exists in harmony with nature.”
