Cross-cutting Studies:
IGES-wide Activities
(i) Linkage to International Organisations and Processes
One of the major strengths of IGES is its significant involvement in important policy processes and close association with a number of important international/regional organisations. Besides issue-specific international processes such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the World Water Forum (WWF), and the 3R Initiative, important cross-cutting processes in which IGES is substantially involved. Aside from these, IGES is expected to participate in various regional and sub-regional meetings on the environment. Such meetings include, but are not limited to, |
| (i) |
A roundtable on urbanisation and environment to be organised by the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) established under the framework of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), |
| (ii) |
The annual meeting of the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN) initiated by USAID (Agency for International Development. |
| (iii) |
A regional meeting on environment issues in Asia organised by ADB, as well as the UNCSD meeting. |
|
(ii) Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED)
IGES has been serving as the secretariat of APFED since its establishment in 2001. IGES supported the process of developing the APFED Final Report that contained more than 100 policy recommendations. The Final Report was adopted in December 2004. Subsequently APFED moved into the second phase in order to implement, together with potential partner institutes, three major activities, (i.e. Policy Dialogues, Knowledge Initiative, and Showcase Projects).

(iii) Synthesis
The second IGES White Paper has launched at the concluding event of the IGES 10th anniversary period in June 2008. This White Paper proposes climate strategies that fully take into account the needs of developing countries in Asia and the Pacific. It looks at the impact of climate change in the Asia-Pacific region and current policies from various aspects such as international framework, market mechanisms, forestry, biofuels, waste, water and business, and sets out policy recommendations that integrate climate change policies and sustainable development and shows the way for new development towards the realisation of a low-carbon society.

(iv) Development of Databases
IGES has developed quite a few databases in the past, particularly those related to good practices in promoting sustainable development observed in various corners of the region. There is a need to improve these databases so that they provide updated information in a more consistent manner. It is also hoped that cases contained in the databases are more effectively related to IGES research and studies. |
