Input for regional preparatory process on Rio+20:
Brief report of ISAP2011 and key messages towards Asia and the Pacific
The Asian and Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD; Rio+20) was held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea from 19 to 20 October 2011. It was organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and the Asian Development Bank. National governments, major group organisations and international and regional organisations joined the meeting.

Over the three hundred delegates from 41 countries in Asia and the Pacific discussed key challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in the region, and exchanged the views on the two themes of green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. There were also discussions on the theme of the institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD). Key outcomes and recommendations from a number of stakeholder meetings were also presented.

Recognising that Asia and the Pacific is one of the most diverse regional groupings characterised by rapid economic growth together with the largest number of the worldfs poor, participants agreed that green economy has to be considered in the context of the overriding objectives of sustainable development and poverty eradication. At the same time, the current IFSD needs to be reformed and improved. Participating countries, international organisations and CSOs expressed a variety of views on the format of the outcome of this meeting, concrete measures to achieve transition to green economy, as well as actual proposals for strengthening IFSD. The meeting produced the following documents as an input to the global preparation process for UNCSD:
1) The Report of the Asian and Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for UNCSD;
2) The Asian and Pacific Regional Outcome on Sustainable Development gthe Seoul Outcomeh; and
3) The Chairfs Summary

IGES has been making substantial contributions to this Asia-Pacific regional and sub-regional preparatory process in North-East Asia, most recently by presenting a report on ISAP2011 (International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific) with key messages from IGES research on the themes and objectives of Rio+20. IGES also participated and made substantial contribution to two meetings held back-to-back with this regional meeting, namely Sub-regional Environmental Policy Dialogue (SEPD8) organised by UNEP and Major Groups. The first draft of the IGES Proposal for Rio+20 was distributed at the Asian and Pacific Regional meeting for early review, and will be further developed for the submission of the final IGES Proposal to UNDESA (Rio+20 Secretariat) by 1 November as an input to the compilation document of the outcome document of Rio+20. In this way, we continue to actively promote our key messages worldwide.
