Towards a Sustainable Asia-Pacific

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), established under an initiative of the Japanese government in 1998, is an international research institute conducting practical and innovative research for realising sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Expanding economic activities in this area are triggering a variety of drastic changes in the lives of people in this region. IGES policy research should be flexible enough to strategically meet the actual needs of this area.

Started in April 2010, the Fifth Phase of IGES strategic research focuses on three issues of critical importance in the Asia-Pacific region; climate change, natural resource management, and sustainable consumption and production. The research is conducted taking into consideration the three key terms of gactual research themesh, ganalytical frameworksh, and gstakeholdersh.

Moreover, IGES plays important roles in such cross-cutting themes as formulation of low-carbon society, climate change adaptation, 3R initiatives and water environment governance, serving as the secretariat for various international initiatives and research networks. In these areas, IGES will actively contribute to policy formulation in the form of information sharing and policy proposals.

The gInternational Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP)h inaugurated in 2009 will continue to provide a platform for sharing information and timely debates among diverse stakeholders on multidisciplinary issues of critical value for the region.

In the Fifth Phase, the IGES President was appointed to clarify the governance structure of the institute, and improve institutional management system including research process management and evaluation of research products. With these measures taken, we are determined to enhance the quality of research. Furthermore, IGES will engage in making innovative and strategic policy proposals in a more proactive manner based on its research, so that more positive impacts will be made on the dynamic policy-making process relating to sustainable development and environment.
