The
4th World Water Forum (WWF4) was held from 16 - 22 March 2006 in Mexico City, under the theme of "Local Actions for a Global Challenge." About 20,000 participants attended from 150 countries.
During the forum, 206 thematic sessions took place under five main themes: Water for Growth and Development; Implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM); Water Supply and Sanitation for All; Water Management for Food and the Environment; and Risk Management. gLocal Actionsh for water issues were also presented.
In the Ministerial Declaration which was adopted during the forum, ministers reiterated the critical importance of fresh water for all aspects of sustainable development. They also reaffirmed their commitments to making further efforts in achieving the internationally agreed-upon goals regarding: integrated water resources management (IWRM), access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation (agreed upon in Agenda 21), the Millennium Declaration, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI).

At the forum, IGES co-organised two sessions in collaboration with other organisations, as well as introducing its own research activities at the IGES exhibit booth in the Japanese Pavilion of the World Water Expo.

Shared groundwater resources for
sustainable development

The IGES Freshwater Resources Management Project co-hosted a session on the subject of "Shared groundwater resources for sustainable development." There, the project presented the outcomes of their research related to "Sustainable Water Management Policy" (SWMP).
There were approximately 200 attendees and presentations were made regarding the importance of groundwater sources and other related issues, as well as the legal and socio-economic aspects of groundwater management. A discussion was then held regarding the content of the individual presentations.
