APFED -for an Equitable and Environmentally Sustainable Society-
Officially launched at ECO ASIA 2001 in October 2001, the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED), which consists of twenty-six eminent persons, aims to address critical issues facing Asia and the Pacific region and to propose a new model for equitable and sustainable development of the region. IGES contributes to the APFED deliberation process by providing relevant background information and proposing options for policy recommendations.

At the Fifth Ministerial Cnference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED2005), IGES hosted a side event on Multi-stakeholder Forum as the Secretariat of APFED, together with Ministry of the Environment, Japan. At the event, the APFED Final Report was officially launched. Also APFED Appeal was adopted, which was reported to the MCED Ministerial Segment on 28 March.

The event was attended by more than 120 participants including key MCED participants.
At the event, APFED launched its Final Report and presented salient points of APFED recommendations for equitable and environmentally sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific region. The event also discussed next steps forward to put its Recommendations into practice and the importance of creating a knowledge-based network linking strategic research institutes in the region was emphasised. In concluding the event, the participants adopted "APFED Appeal to MCED 2005"
, which was reported by Akio Morishima, APFED Member from Japan/ Chair of the Board of Directors of IGES, to the Ministerial Segment of MCED 2005 on 28 March 2005.
