The Fifth Ministerial Cnference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED2005) was held from 24 to 29 March 2005 in Korea.

IGES contributed to MCED by hosting a side event on Multi-stakeholder Forum as the Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED), together with Ministry of the Environment, Japan. At the event, the APFED Final Report was officially launched. Also APFED Appeal was adopted, which was reported to the MCED Ministerial Segment on 28 March.

The "Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment" for which IGES provides secretariat and technical support is one of the major outputs from MCED 2000 and its achievements were reported to the MCED 2005. At the same time, the next stage of action (2005-2010) was proposed, which looks to take on a significant role in achieving environmental improvement in the region in the coming years.

Message from the Asia-Pacific : A New Era for Sustainable Development and a Knowledge Network

APFED launched its Final Report and presented salient points of recommendations at the event. Through the discussion, the importance of creating a knowledge-based network amongst strategic research institutes in the region was emphasised.
In concluding the event, the participants adopted "APFED Appeal to MCED 2005"(PDF, 17KB) , which was reported to MCED Ministerial Segment on 28 March 2005.

Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment
Visible improvement in the urban environment in Asia and the Pacific
The Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment is one of the major outputs from MCED 2000 and will be included on the main agenda of MCED 2005. This is a programme of UNESCAP for which IGES provides secretariat and technical support in the implementation of the activities of the Kitakyushu Initiative Network. Achievements will be reported to the MCED 2005.

What is the Kitakyushu Initiative?
The Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment was adopted by the Environmental Ministers at MCED 2000 to assist in the priority implementation of the Regional Action Programme 2001-2005, with specific focus on environmental quality and human health in urban areas. The core activities in the implementation include (i) Collection of successful practices; (ii) Pilot activities; and (iii) Seminars and Trainings. An intercity network was established to carry out the mandate of the Kitakyushu Initiative programme, focusing on capacity building of local governments.

Pilot activities
