IGES and ICLEI Japan on Collaboration to Promote Joint Research and Activities towards Sustainable Cities in the Asia-Pacific
On 16 April 2013, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability Japan Office (ICLEI Japan) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on promoting collaboration of research and activities to contribute to realising sustainable cities in the Asia-Pacific region.

IGES promotes trade in legal and sustainable timber through the Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade Partnership (RAFT)
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is part of an international NGO partnership - Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade Partnership (RAFT) -promoting the trade in legal and sustainable timber. In 2013, IGES will conduct analytical studies on the reliability and uptake of independent legality and sustainability verification standards in Papua New Guinea.

IGES and UNFCCC Secretariat Sign MOU on a Framework for Cooperation
On 12 October, 2012, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES, Kanagawa, Japan, Chair, Board of Directors, Prof. Hironori Hamanaka) and the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC, Bonn, Germany, Executive Secretary, Dr. Christiana Figueres) agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of a framework for cooperation.

On 4 September 2012, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) entered into an Agreement on Cooperation to increase the opportunities for collaboration at the technical level in fields of common interest and activity.

IGES launched the fourth White Paper "Greening Governance in Asia-Pacific"
Every two years the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) publishes a White Paper on economic, social and environmental policy issues in the Asia Pacific region. On 25 July 2012, IGES will launch the fourth IGES White Paper "Greening Governance in Asia-Pacific" in Yokohama at the 4th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2012).

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) will co-host The 4th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific [ISAP2012]
ISAP2012 will be convened focusing on four timely issues as Plenary Sessions. It will examine what the green economy really means; the best ways to build communities that are resilient to disasters; the way forward for climate change polices after the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban; and as a follow up to Rio+20, how governance can be a driving force for sustainable development. Parallel Sessions will include versatile themes such as gUrban City Challenges in Asiah and the gSatoyama Initiative for Biodiversityh.

Balancing the Energy and Climate Goals of Japan
- 80% Reduction of CO2 by 2050 is Possible with Reduced Nuclear Energy -
Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan is going through a full revision of its energy and environment policy. However, most of the public debates focus on short-term energy supply and cost issues and not on the long-term implications taking into account Japanfs long-term commitment to climate change mitigation. This research investigated the long-term economic implications of a gradual phase-out of nuclear power by 2050 on Japanfs energy system and on achieving long-term CO2 emissions reduction (-80% by 2050 compared to 1990 level). The research aims to highlight possible trajectories for the energy and environment policy of the country in the coming decades.

IGES made the transition to a public-interest incorporated foundation on 1 April 2012
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), in accordance with the three laws related to public interest incorporated foundations which came into force on 1 December 2008, has continued with the process to make the transition to a public interest incorporated foundation, based on Article 34 of the Civil Code. We can inform you that we received a recommendation from the Cabinet Office Committee for public interest corporation authorisation as well as authorisation from the Prime Minister, and we are therefore very pleased to announce that IGES made the transition to a public interest incorporated foundation on 1 April 2012.

Side Event on East Asia Low-Carbon Growth Partnership Tokyo Ministerial Dialogue
- East Asia Knowledge Platform for Low Carbon Growth -
On the occasion of the East Asia Low-Carbon Growth Partnership Tokyo Ministerial Dialogue to be held from 15 April 2012, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will jointly hold a side-event to introduce our concept to promote “East Asia Knowledge Platform for Low Carbon Growth”, which aims to help developing countries create and implement low-carbon and resilient development strategies compatible with their development goals.

IGES-ERI Convene Policy Research Workshop on Post-Durban Climate Policy in Beijing, China
On 6 January 2012, IGES and the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission of China (ERI) of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) co-hosted a policy dialogue on low-carbon development in China and Japan, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ). The main purpose of the meeting was for policymakers and researchers to exchange views on both domestic and international climate policies and discuss possibilities for further climate research collaboration between China and Japan, following the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Durban, South Africa.

COP17 Side event highlights: How China and Japan can work toward a low-carbon Asia
On 1 December 2011, at the Seventeenth Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Durban, South Africa, the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy, Tsinghua University, and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) convened a side event entitled gLow Carbon Development in the Asian Countriesh, which drew approximately 100 participants from government, civil society and the private sector. The event highlighted recent research findings on domestic policies and activities aimed at developing the carbon market in China and Japan, and looked at areas for future cooperation leading towards a low-carbon Asia.

Asia-Pacific: Beyond Efficiency - Curbing the Trends in Resource Consumption
New Report Makes Compelling Case for Transition to Green Economy (1970-2005)
The report "Resource Efficiency: Economics and Outlook for Asia and the Pacific (REEO)" is the result of a unique collaboration between four leading regional institutes. The main author is the Australian research organisation CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and the contributors include the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) in India. The REEO project was initiated by UNEP and the report was launched on 20 September 2011 at the World Resources Forum in Davos, Switzerland. IGES is announcing key messages based on the REEO report, which establishes for the first time this kind of data and analysis in the Asia Pacific Region.

On 19 September 2011, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Viet Nam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in developing market mechanisms to combat climate change through the IGES New Market Mechanism Capacity Building Activity in Viet Nam.

On 25 July 2011, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to extend collaboration in addressing the important sustainability agenda of Asia and the Pacific, in such a way as to create synergies and complementarities between the two organisations. The collaborative activities under the MOU will include joint research activities and publications as well as joint organisation of and participation in seminars and symposiums.

On 26 July 2011, IGES and Yokohama City University (YCU) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to extend collaboration in addressing the important sustainability agenda of Asia and the Pacific, in such a way as to create synergies and complementarities between the two organisations. The collaborative activities under the MOU will include joint research activities and publications as well as joint organisation of and participation in seminars and symposiums. Further details of any collaborative activities will be described in the individual agreement to be developed by the two organisations in future.

IGES Bangkok Regional Centre Commences Operations
- Strengthening the activities in the Asia and Pacific Region -
IGES launched its Regional Centre in Bangkok, Thailand with the aim of strengthening collaboration with partners and key stakeholders in the region. Attended by more than seventy guests from governments, embassies in Thailand, international and regional organisations, and research institutes located in the city, the IGES Regional Centre Opening Ceremony was held on 3 June 2011 in Bangkok.

Regardless of Outcomes in Cancun, Institutions in Asia and the Pacific Work Toward Climate Solutions
On 3 December 2010, at the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, Mexico, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) convened a side event entitled gShifting to a Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Development in Asia and the Pacifich, which drew approximately 120 participants from government, civil society and the private sector. The event highlighted concrete steps Asiafs policymakers are making to integrate climate considerations into development processes and build climate resilience.

Regarding the Establishment of an Asian Co-benefits Partnership
A co-benefits approach involves designing policies and projects that address development priorities while simultaneously incorporating climate change concerns. In recent years, a growing number of international organisations have promoted a co-benefits approach, while some countries in Asia have initiated co-benefits projects. However, the lack of a mechanism to share information and facilitate dialogue on these issues has limited the integration of co-benefits into sectoral planning and development policies in Asia. On 9 November 2010, approximately 100 participants in the Better Air Quality 2010 conference in Singapore helped launch an gAsian Co-benefits Partnershiph with the support of the Japanese Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ). The Partnership will serve as an informal and interactive platform to improve knowledge management and stakeholder cooperation on co-benefits in Asia. The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) will serve as the secretariat for the Partnership.

Asian Environmental Agencies to Expand Enforcement of Environmental Laws
KYOTO, JAPAN (Nov. 10, 2010) - Environmental agency leaders from 16 Asian nations, Australia, Jordan and the United States gathered today to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws at a meeting organised by USAID-supported Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN) and IGES. Meeting through Friday, agency decision-makers and practitioners will develop an action plan for countries to join hands to overcome a complex array of environmental challenges, including water resource management, climate change and air pollution, by improving law enforcement.

The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) launches Local and Regional Policy Makers report
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) launches the outline of the Local and Regional Policy Makers report (D2). TEEB D2 report is one of the TEEB reports which compiles worldwide research results on loss of biodiversity from an economic perspective. Under the research project of "Policy Research on Environmental Economics" initiative by Ministry of the Environment, Japan, IGES has disseminated the impacts of the TEEB reports and required policies in cooperation with TEEB secretariat.

Research Partnership for the Application of Low Carbon Technology for Sustainable Development
On 17 May 2010, the IGES Kansai Research Centre officially launched an international joint research project with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Kyoto University. This joint research aims to promote the application of Japanese low-carbon technologies in India. The joint research will be implemented as a Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) project, implemented through collaboration with Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

IGES has launched Policy Brief #10, entitled " Renewable Energy: A Strategic Policy for Sustainable Development ." This policy brief demonstrates the importance of renewable energy in terms of its multipurpose benefits to the society, environment and economy as a whole. The time has come to accept renewable energy as a strategic policy choice to protect our future in a sustainable manner. IGES Activities during UNFCCC COP15/CMP5
At several side events and meetings at the UNFCCC COP15/CMP5 (7-18 December 2009, Copenhagen, Denmark), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) provided policy recommendations and exchanged views on issues such as low-carbon development, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), climate change adaptation, and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). IGES presentations drew upon original research and were intended to support the formation of a future climate change regime that reflects the concerns and development aspirations of stakeholders in Asia.

IGES Side Events at UNFCCC COP14, Poznan Poland
IGES feels strongly that these negotiations stand at a critical juncture in the process leading to an agreement on the post-2012 climate regime next year in Copenhagen. We, therefore, organised several side events at the 14th Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP14). IGES Consultations on the Post-2012 Climate Regime Forum in Kyoto on the theme
"Towards the Copenhagen Agreement - Challenges and Perspectives"
On 9 and 10 October 2008, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) organised a policy forum on Asia's Post-2012 Climate Regime, with the theme "Towards the Copenhagen Agreement - Challenges and Perspectives". The event was held in Kyoto, in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Approximately 80 participants attended the forum including policymakers, businesses and intellectuals from ten Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan, the Philippines and Viet Nam), as well as representatives from five developed countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and USA) and from international organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Urgent Message from India to Japanese Industries
On 21 November 2008, in Yokohama, Japan, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) will co-organise a symposium entitled gPartnership between Japan and India Towards a Low Carbon Economy - Business Opportunities in India: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy -h, in collaboration with the Energy Resources Institute (TERI), New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The speakers from India include Mr Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Power and Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, IPCC Chair (President of TERI). The symposium aims to inform the audience of the latest policies and market trends in India such as the National Action Plan on Climate Change which was launched this June, as well as to introduce notable business strategies of Japanese and Indian businesses in the two fields.

UNFCCC Secretariat and IGES Agree Upon a Cooperative Undertaking to Exchange CDM Data and Information
On 7 April, the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC Secretariat), located in Bonn, Germany, and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), located in Kanagawa, Japan, signed the Memorandum of Understanding for a cooperative undertaking to exchange CDM data and information. By exchanging data from the CDM databases and resulting analytical information, it is hoped that web-based statistics on UNFCCC CDM can be enhanced and supplemented. This will also ensure the consistency of the data and information from the two organisations made available to the public.

IGES 10th Anniversary Symposium "Strategy to Combat Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific"

The US-Japan Workshop on "The Co-benefits of Climate Actions in Asia"
On April 22, IGES, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment (MoEJ) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) conducted a workshop in Bangkok, Thailand entitled "The Co-benefits of Climate Actions in Asia." The workshop examined the opportunities for and the obstacles to enhancing the policy impacts of co-benefits in Asia. Prominent speakers from Japan and the U.S. - representing governments, academia, non-governmental organisations and leading research institutions - along with participants from China, India, Indonesia, Viet Nam, the Philippines, and Thailand exchanged the latest information on the policies and measures to achieve developmental goals as well as reductions in emissions of global greenhouse gases.

New Appointment to the Chair of the Board of Directors of IGES

IGES launched its "CDM Country Guide"
A series of manuals for CDM project development in each Asian country

IGES published the "CDM Country Guide," a series of manuals for CDM project development for each Asian country including, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. The Guide was compiled under the Integrated Capacity Strengthening for the CDM/JI (ICS-CDM/JI) Programme initiated by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. The version for Thailand will be available in early 2006.

IGES launched its "Asian Perspectives on Climate Regime Beyond 2012: Concerns, interests and priorities"
at the IGES side event of UNFCCC COP11 and COP/MOP1

In 2005, IGES organised consultations on the national and regional basis in six Asian nations to establish their concerns, interest and priorities for the climate regime beyond 2012. The participating countries included: China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Viet Nam. The results of these consultations are summarised in this new publication, which was presented on 2 December at the IGES side event of COP11 and COP/MOP1. This side event attracted the international media and was a great success with nearly 150 participants in attendance.

IGES has launched Policy Brief #2, entitled "Information Access as a Vehicle for Sustainable Development in Asia - Establishing regional agreement in Asia". This issue proposes the steps for promoting information access, such as the establishment of an agreement at the regional level, the development of a basic model of legislation on access to environmental information in the region and the promotion of multi-stakeholder dialogue regionally and internationally.

Yale-IGES International Workshop on Urbanization and Environmental Change
IGES and Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (FES) are co-organizing an international workshop on urban environment, April 22-24, New Haven, USA. About 25 top scholars and researchers in this field are invited to participate. The workshop aims to explore both physical and social aspects of environmental change brought about by urbanization, and discuss barriers and leverages for a more sustainable urban future. Topics will cover various aspects of urban environment, with examples from cities all over the world. An edited volume will be published after the workshop.

The workshop is the first collaborative work between IGES and Yale FES. It was shaped when Yale FES invited Dr. Xuemei Bai, a senior research fellow at IGES to teach at the school for two years as a visiting professor in urban ecology. IGES Urban Environmental Management Project moves its base to Kitakyushu
The IGES Urban Environmental Management Project, based at IGES headquarters in Hayama, Kanagawa since 1998, has relocated to the IGES Kitakyushu Office in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka.
The IGES Kitakyushu Office, established in October 1999, now home to the IGES Urban Environmental Management Project is a local activity base carrying out assessments and analyses of environmental policies of local governments in Asia and the Pacific, including the City of Kitakyushu. The Eleventh Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2003)
The Eleventh Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2003) was held in Shonan Village, Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan on 7 June 2003, hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. Press Release: Establishment of IGES Project Office in Bangkok and its Inaugural Symposium
As one of the regional activities, IGES conducts a research project, i.e. APEIS/RISPO and contributes to the GEF-Project on the National Environmental Performance Assessment and Sub-regional Strategic Environment Framework in the Greater Mekong Sub-region that is led by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The IGES Project Office in Bangkok is established in April 2003 at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as a project office to strongly promote these activities.

To commemorate the establishment of its Project Office in Bangkok, IGES organised an inaugural symposium, entitled; "Environmental Challenges, Opportunities and Regional Cooperation in South East Asia" at AIT Conference Center Auditorium of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand on 30 May 2003.
