On 25 June, Sino-Japan Friendship Centre for Environmental Protection, located in Beijing, China, and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, located in Kanagawa, Japan, signed aMemorandum of the Understanding (MOU) for cooperative activities on the CDM.
Associated activities under this MOU will be conducted in conjunction with the MOU between the Sino-Japan Friendship Centre for Environmental Protection and IGES regarding cooperative activities for environmental protection, which was signed on 2 July 2006.
In addition, the Sino-Japan Friendship Centre for Environmental Protection and IGES are appointed as a platform for environmental cooperation between China and Japan, according to the MOU for further environmental cooperation between the Ministry of Environmental Protection, China and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, which was signed on 13 June, 2009. Therefore, this MOU is recognised as a practical step towards further development of Sino-Japan cooperative activities for environmental protection.
This year, IGES is planning to conduct a CDM capacity building for validators of the Designated Operational Entities (DOEs) in China under this MOU. Lack of human resources in the DOEs due to the rapid increase of CDM projects is recognised as one of the critical bottlenecks for developing the CDM across the world. IGES will promote this activity jointly with the Sino-Japan Friendship Centre for Environmental Protection in order not only to accelerate the creation of human and technology networks between China and Japan but also to contribute to resolve bottlenecks regarding the CDM for further development. |
