FY2011 3rd IGES Global Environmental Seminar
Building Sustainable and Resilient Local Communities
- Actions in Asia and Support for Reconstruction of East Japan |
 |
 |
Natural disasters and increasing climate variability have been negatively affecting our economic activities and daily life as exemplified by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, and other natural disasters in Asia and the Pacific.
One of the projects IGES has been working on as a post-disaster recovery proposal is ghow to build resilient local communitiesh, and under this theme, Session 1 of the seminar presented the gIdea of Green Coastal Leviesh (keynote speech), field projects on climate change adaptation in Asia, and activities of the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network Forum(*APAN). Session 2 featured a lively discussion, with reports on problems (obstacles to recovery for local industry, human resources to build community, new generations to link cities and local communities) that need to be overcome for rapid reconstruction in Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Prefecture, one of the disaster-affected localities, as well as discussion on the keynote speech from Dr. Akira Miyawaki, who proposes to build communities with disaster preparedness by using the rubble. |
