IPCC Open Meeting
Estimation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions - A Basis of Climate Actions
Reliable, comparable and consistent estimates of national emissions and removals of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere are needed if any agreement on limiting the amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is to be successful. Emission Inventories are estimates of national emissions and removals of greenhouse gases that fulfil this task. The work of the IPCCfs Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) is to produce and promote guidelines for the production of emission inventories that are transparent, complete, consistent, comparable and as accurate as possible. The Guidelines produced by the TFI are used by all countries; parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have to report their emissions and removals of greenhouse gases and they use TFI guidelines to do so.

Japan supports the TFI, and its Technical Suuport Unit (TSU) is hosted by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Hayama, Kanagawa.

This meeting aimed to explain the work of the TFI - what emission inventories are; how emissions are estimated and why they are important as a basis of climate actions.
