It is estimated that about 1.6 billion people on this planet live without access to electricity. 400 million of them are in India. They must live without the comforts we take for granted. Children who do not have access to adequate lighting cannot study.

The "Solar Lantern Project" aims to provide rechargeable solar lanterns to rural Indian areas where electricity is still not available. This project has been advocated and promoted by Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Director-General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India. Solar lanterns both improve the quality of peoples' lives and help prevent global warming by reducing CO2 emissions.

Having approved the project, IGES carried out a fundraising campaign in FY 2009, donations for which amounted to JPY391,393. IGES is proud to report this result, and we would like to give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who assisted with or contributed to the campaign.

The proceeds from the campaign have been donated to Gaia Initiative (Chair of the Board of Directors: Ms. Tomoyo Nonaka), which is the Indian Solar Lantern Projectfs representative organisation in Japan. Although we did not reach our fundraising target of JPY850,000, our total donation is worth one charging station, consisting of solar panels and charging equipment.

Gaia Initiative will now pass on the donation to the gLighting a Billion Lives Campaignh run by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in India. They will decide how and where the money will be put to use. Henceforth, IGES will make continue to make regular reports on how your donations are being put to use.

gBrilliant initiative. I wonder if it would be possible to give similar support to the people of Papua New Guinea. They could use it!h
gThis project has enormous potential. Good luck!h

gI hope that as many people as possible enjoy the benefits of this project.h
gI think it is wonderful that these solar lanterns not only bring light to the lives of Indian villagers, but can also spread the use of renewable energy.h

How the Solar Lantern Project works
Solar panels are installed in the centre of a village. One charging station can charge 50 lanterns during the daytime. Villagers collect the lanterns in the evening and return them the next morning. The villagers are responsible for the maintenance of the charging stations and the lending of the lanterns. Each household pays 2 rupees, or 5-6 yen, for 1 lantern per day.

The Solar Lantern Project and IGES
The Solar Lantern project has been advocated and promoted by Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Director-General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India. As two research organisations addressing environmental issues both in Asia and around the world, TERI and IGES have established a firm basis for the exchange of research.

Prof. Hamanaka (Chair of the IGES Board of Directors) and Governor Matsuzawa (of Kanagawa Prefecure) approve of Dr. Pachaurifs initiative, and have become supporters of the Solar Lantern Project.
