Expert workshop

Towards further collaboration between Japanese research community and IIASA

Recently IIASA commenced The World in 2050 (TWI2050) project in order to address the full spectrum of transformational challenges related to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an integrated manner, through science-policy coordination between policy experts and modelling analysis teams. TWI2050 particularly emphasises on illustrating transformation pathways towards sustainable society based on modelling analysis and fully employs back-casting modelling techniques to achieve SDGs. Currently a number of major research institutes in the world, including the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) from Japan, take part in the project. The expert workshop aimed to strengthen collaboration between IIASA and Japanese research community in research towards sustainable future, in particular TWI2050 project.

On 30 January 2017, 17 participants consisting of researchers of IIASA and Japanese research institutes as well as policymakers from Japan participated in the expert workshop “Towards further collaboration between Japanese research community and IIASA” in Tokyo, Japan. This workshop stocktook ongoing research activities of participating institutes related to sustainable future, in particular scientific analysis and modelling works, and actively discussed future direction of collaboration between IIASA and Japanese research community.
