FY 1999 - FY 2001
[Backgound]
ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project (LTPP) was conducted from 1993 to
2001 under the framework of the Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific
(ECO ASIA). It was expected that LTPP implements scientific research on
various aspects of environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region and
provides the ECO ASIA with scientific background information, recommendations,
and policy options for ministerial level discussions.
[Activities]
During the Phase I of LTPP, 4 key concepts for attaining long-term sustainable
development in the Asia-Pacific region were developed, i.e. i) Eco-Consciousness,
ii) Eco-Partnership, iii) Eco-Technology/ Eco-Investment, and iv) Eco-Policy
Linkage. IGES was invited to conduct key role in implementing the second
phase of LTPP (1998-2001) since FY1999, i.e. a year after its establishment
and launching of strategic research.
In FY1999 and FY2000, New Development Patterns Project (NDP) of IGES took
an initiative on conducting relevant research activities in close collaboration
with IGES internal and external researchers/ institutes, and Long-Term
Perspective and Policy Integration Project (LTP), took over its role in
FY2001. They put forward policy recommendations and scientific background
information reports to annual ECO ASIA, ESCAP/MCED (Ministerial Conference
on Environment and Development), and other international policy dialogues
on environment and development. As the final report, "Towards a Sustainable
Asia and the Pacific: Report of ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project
Phase II" focusing on the application of the 4 key concepts to a wide range
of environmental issues in the region was delivered to ECO ASIA 2001 (Tokyo,
October 2001).
The LTPP's activities were completed with the delivery of the final report
and the project was succeeded by a new project called "Asia-Pacific Environmental
Innovation Strategy Project (APEIS)". It is expected that IGES will continuously
take an important role in implementing APEIS in the future.
