November 2000 - March 2004
In recent years increased attention has been paid to environmental implications
of the IT revolution. On one hand, negative impacts on the environment
have been pointed out such that further prevalence of IT equipment leads
to increased electricity consumption of the society as a whole as well
as increased amount of waste of IT products. On the other hand, positive
impacts have been emphasized such that IT can be a powerful tool to achieve
enhanced efficiency of resource/energy use. Those harmful and beneficial
effects of IT on the environment have, however, not fully discussed to
date.
Given the above, this research had the following three objectives:
+ To collect existing IT related projects and activities
for environmental management
+ To examine both positive and negative implications of IT revolution on
the environment
+ To deliver policy proposals to promote IT application for improving the
environment
[Activities]
(1) ICT and the Environment in Asia and the Pacific (ICTEAP)
The following research activities have currently been conducted for the
initiative known as ICTEAP by the United Nations Environment Programme
/ Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP) since August 2001.
(2) Expert Meetings on IT Revolution and the Environment
Expert Meetings on IT Revolution and the Environment have been organized
jointly with the Environmental Management Forum, Nikkei Business Publications,
Inc. basically every month in Tokyo since December 2000. Eleven experts
from academia, industry, research institutes and those from IGES and Nikkei
Business Publications actively discuss how the IT revolution changes economic
activities, individuals' lifestyles, and social structures, as well as
how IT can be used for saving energy and resources consumption.
The final report will be published.
(3) e-learning material ICT and Environment
An e-learning material ICT and Environment has been created in cooperation
with IGES Capacity Building Programme. The e-course provides basic understanding about the linkages
of ICT and the environment.
