3R Workshop on Effective Waste Management and Resource Use Efficiency in East and Southeast Asia

15-16 February 2006, ADB, UNEP/ROAP, UNCRD and IGES jointly organised the "3R Workshop on Effective Waste Management and Resource Use Efficiency in East and Southeast Asia" to review and share experiences with key issues relating to resource efficiency and effective waste management in East and Southeast Asia.

The followings are some of the major discussion points raised during the wrap-up of the workshop;

- "Traditional" waste management issues still dominant in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
- Call for change in mindset - "it's a shame to waste (mottainai)".
- Emphasis should be given to the efficiency of "upstream" policy measures rather than emphasising the conflict between producers and consumers.
- Policy frameworks: regulations, market incentives, good governance/enforcement are the key issues in the region.
- The concept of "Responsibility" is stressed throughout the workshop.
