Managing GHG Emissions through Solid Waste Minimisation Training Course |
| |
 |
Sustainable solid waste management is a top priority for most local governments in developing countries in Asia. In order to help this situation, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) joined with CITYNET (the Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements) and its partners in organising a training course from 17 to 19 October 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There were a total 30 participants and resource persons in attendance from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Japan who discussed how Asian cities can deal with solid waste issues as part of managing GHG emissions.
The training course focused on three major aspects: solid waste strategic planning, waste minimisation through composting and public/private partnership financing. IGES Kitakyushu Urban Centre gave introductory presentations based on its strategic policy research and practical experiences, and facilitated the discussions in solid waste strategic planning and waste minimisation through composting. The participants identified the importance of strategic planning and integrated actions, community participation, waste separation and reduction, value of composting and reduction of biodegradable waste at source, effective awareness programmes, private sector participation and commitment of the politicians as well as officials in finding sustainable solutions to solid waste management issues in Asia.
All presentations are available on CITYNETfs website.
