Participation in the 16th IUAPPA World Clean Air Congress

  • From 29 September - 4 October 2013, the 16th IUAPPA (International Union of Air Pollution prevention and Environmental Protection Associations) World Clean Air Congress was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in the Republic of South Africa. Held once every three years, the theme of the current 16th Congress was "Many Nations - One Atmosphere: Plotting the Path to Sustainability,” and it highlighted the exchange of experiences and ideas - serving as a pathway to the development of innovative initiatives to manage air quality and climate change, ultimately ensuring the sustainability of our economies and way of life.

The event hosted more than 100 international and local environmental specialists and scientists presenting their most recent research findings on climate change and air pollution. The Congress was expected to be attended by more than 350 delegates. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), of which IGES is non-state partner, also participated and supported the special sessions as co-sponsor.

From IGES, Dr. Mark Elder, Principal Researcher and Senior Coordinator, participated and made two presentations. The first presentation was on “Cooperation on Climate and Air Pollution in East Asia,” and the second was on “Strengthening International Cooperation on Air Pollution in East Asia.” These presentations were based on the research under the Strategic Research Project (S-7-3) supported by the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.
