On 20 December 2007, Friends of the Earth (FoE) Japan organised a "study group meeting on forests and climate change" at its headquarters in Tokyo. Fifteen representatives from FoE Japan, Global Environmental Forum, Biomass Industrial Society Network and IGES (2 Forest Conservation, Livelihoods and Rights Project researchers) participated in the meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to share information on the movement/discussions of various stakeholders such as governments, international organisations and forest and climate change-related NGOs on the issue of REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation). REDD was high on the agenda of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 13th Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP13), which was held from 3-14 December in Bali, Indonesia. During the study group meeting presentations were delivered on "Deforestation and Climate Change", "Movement of REDD in Indonesia", and "Developing Country NGOs and Northern Climate NGOs". The presentations prompted a lively discussion on understanding REDD issues and on the future direction of REDD activities of various organisations.
The Forest Conservation Livelihoods and Rights Project is currently drafting a discussion chapter on REDD for the Second IGES White Paper and will participate in REDD-related research in Laos, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia in FY2008.
