IGES Roundtable on Avoided Deforestation
28 September 2007, Tokyo |
 |
Avoided deforestation (AD) - referring to the prevention or reduction of forest loss in order to reduce emissions of global warming gases - has become a key issue in policy debates about climate change.
The objectives of the three hour roundtable were to:
| - |
To consider whether IGES should establish a research programme on avoided deforestation and, if so, how |
| - |
To discuss and share ideas and information on the topic of avoided deforestation |
| - |
To provide intellectual input into the IGES White Paper
|
The twenty-five participants were from government, research institutes, universities and non-governmental organisations, and from the IGES Forest Conservation Livelihoods and Rights Project, the IGES Climate Change Project and the Technical Support Unit of the IPCC based at IGES (see attached participants list). Several presentations were delivered during the roundtable to share information and to prompt discussion. The roundtable concluded with a half hour open discussion. The participants expressed strong support for IGES to take up avoided deforestation as a research theme and discussed a variety of issues on which IGES could focus its research.
