The effects of global warming are expected to become clearly tangible over the next hundred years, but experts are divided on the issue of when countermeasures to this long-term problem should be introduced. On the 9th September, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, together with the National Institute for Environmental Studies, held an open symposium at the Fukoku Seimei Building to discuss the near-term actions that can be taken as part of long-term efforts to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. As well as presentations by experts from Japan, the USA, Europe and Indonesia, there was a panel discussion to enhance understanding of the theme, allowing plenty of time for questions and answers.

Background:
The symposium offered the audience to submit written questions to thespeakers. Those questions were supposed to be taken up during the panel discussion, but some of the questions were left unanswered due to time limitation.
